PhD Scholarship Opportunity
Spectroscopy of magnetic materials for rare-earth dopant-based
quantum technologies
We have a PhD scholarship that requires a student who can start in early 2026. The project is a collaboration with our colleagues at University of Otago and involves optical spectroscopy and modelling of rare-earth ions in magnetic materials.
In addition to experimental and modelling work at Canterbury,
there would be opportunities for research visits to University of Otago and overseas.

Tutorials on Electronic Structure Calculations
For "Electronic Structure and Transistion Intensities in Rare-Earth Materials", the Handout provides extensive background and exercises, and the Presentation Slides give an overview.
For "Making Sense of Rare-Earth Electronic Structure - A Tutorial", I currently only have Presentation Slides.
There is some overlap between the two tutorials, but this one emphasises the fundamentals of tensor operators and the use of magnetic splitting data as an aid to the determination of crystal-field parameters.
